GRAMMY Award winner and Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, Dan Hill and Juno Award winner and Canada’s Walk of Fame inductee, Jully Black have released a song that they wrote and recorded together ‘twenty-something’ years ago! The song is called ‘Something More’ and you can read the personally penned accounts of the day that the song was written and recorded and the meaning of the song then, and now, below.

THE STORY OF ‘SOMETHING MORE’ – BY JULLY BLACK

I remember going to Dan’s house and sitting and doing that writing session as a newly signed artist and writer to Warner Chappell – and I was just in awe of his story telling. ‘Something More’ was birthed out of the desire for a world – for me, an inner world and an outer world – that is inspirational, that is hopeful. Who knew what I might have been experiencing at that time, and who knew what Dan might have been experiencing? But both of us met up at this intersection of believing that there is always something more, something better. “Do you believe there’s a reason for everything?” Just that line in itself goes beyond religion; and now, twenty-something years later I’m able to look in hindsight and say, “Yes, there is a reason why we met up on that day. There is a reason why that song was written. The narrative felt, and still feels as personally necessary for me as it is globally relevant now, for all.

That the song is coming out now is very timely because I’m on a healing journey and in order to heal from past pain and trauma, I have to believe that there is something more, something better, and that there is something I’m worthy of. Whatever that something is, it’s divinely ordered and assigned to my life; just like this song, the message and the opportunity to share a hopeful and optimistic sentiments during challenging times.

Dan had, and has since, written songs for countless artists, but the parts that were to be sung by a male were destined to be sung by, and heard and felt in, Dan’s voice. Dan has a kind voice, and there is no question that ‘Something More’ required the kindness of Dan’s voice. He also has a voice that cries on the music, even if he’s not crying out of his eyes. It’s so rich, elegant, genuinely soulful and uniquely Dan.

It’s a huge honour; it’s a huge privilege, a huge blessing to be able to have the sheer treasure that is Dan as a friend, a mentor and a peer. I think of the other amazing music journeys and collaborative opportunities that I’ve had and I see how being on this song is really helping me to realize that it needs to get the love and the attention that it deserves; I see how I don’t have to keep my head and creativity so razor-focused on the genres of R&B or the genre of Hip-Hop, but more so focused on music and story telling that will touch anyone with a heartbeat.

I’m so happy that Dan’s wants this to come out. With his beautiful voice on the song, at this stage in his career, when he really doesn’t have to do anything, I believe that he wants it to come out because of his love of music, his love for me, and that he is also doing this in service.

THE STORY OF ‘SOMETHING MORE’ – BY DAN HILL

Hope, healing, and optimism. That’s the message I most wanted to give the world when I set out to write “Something More” with Jully Black close to two decades ago. A sense of aspiration, an awareness that something greater exists beyond what we can see or feel in the physical realm; and an understanding that we can nurture deeper meaning and purpose in our lives. The words and music to “Something More” came to me in a blazing flash, one that flowed out of my fingers and onto the piano keys. As the lyrics started to form, a quote from the Bible guided me: “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Jully was signed to Universal Music when we first met, and I was immediately overwhelmed by both her extraordinary talent and her preternatural presence. She radiated an enormous sense of empathy, spirituality and wisdom. When we started singing together, the first thing that hit me was the extraordinary and authentic quality of our vocal blend. Maybe our voices meld so seamlessly because we feel like family, united by something deeper than our careers.

Adam Messinger, who co-produced “Something More,” had a profound influence on this track. He is deservedly one of the most successful producers and songwriters in the world. Unquestionably, his inspired work on this record is major part of its remarkable impact.

Songs always come equipped with their own authentic stories. The story of “Something More” began long ago. But its journey shares something with the countless songs that become hits years, or even decades, after they’ve been written. “Something More” is being released now because of the timeliness of its message. With the seismic divisions and polarization that is tearing at this world today, redemption, aspiration, and healing have never been more relevant.

“Being nominated for this prestigious award is proof positive that even when you feel invisible the intention and the purpose behind your work will take you into rooms you may physically never see,’ shares Jully. “I made a conscious decision to dedicate my life to service while waiting for the inspiration to make music again after the passing of my late Mother, Agatha Gordon, in 2017 and I believe that it’s not making that work about me that helped Canada’s Walk of Fame recognize me with fresh eyes and see me for who I am more so than what I’ve done.”“I know the energy behind my star will hold people up as they walk across it daily especially those who have been marginalized and disenfranchised and for that I am grateful. I am also so happy to share the common trait of humility with all my fellow inductees. The class of 2021 is a special class.”

Toronto, ON, October 4, 2021 – Working with Toronto-based ROUND agency, BGC Canada (formerly Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada) today released a new campaign that showcases the confidence BGC Clubs instill in 200,000 kids and teens every year. Available in English and French, No. More. Barriers. is our first national campaign after recently rebranding to BGC—a renewed identity that embraces the inclusive practices we are known for across the country.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada became BGC Canada in May 2021 because Clubs across the country open their doors to all kids and teens

Removing gender from our name modernizes the BGC brand and echoes the inclusive practices we’re known for, without straying too far from our history and brand awareness

Embraces the fact that we serve young people of all ages, backgrounds, and identities

To reference the old name, please write: BGC Canada (formerly Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada)

In referring to ourselves with the new name, BGC Canada can stand for the national team or the entire federated movement e.g. BGC Canada and their Clubs across the country

We use BGC Clubs or just Clubs (always capitalized C) when referring to the local (and independently operated) Clubs e.g. BGC Clubs in Alberta

In this third season, the world has changed. It’s a post-COVID society – perspectives and priorities have altered, relationships have formed while others have fallen apart. For Marcie and the team at Halifax Legal Aid, COVID has exacerbated the chasm between the rich and the poor, making their work all the more critical.

I remember being a little girl living in the Jane and Finch community of Toronto and wondering why everyone said that my neighbourhood was so bad when all I ever saw was the good. All I saw were people of different races and ages coming together, laughing, playing, dancing, listening to music and sharing our meals because that’s how we got to know each other; we broke bread and we explained what Baklava was, or Ackee and Salt Fish, or Butter Chicken, or Chow Mein … all the things we learned about each other, we learned through our palates.

Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada (now BGC Canada) was a place that was safe and also a brave space. I felt so brave there that I would comfortably speak up; I would share my opinions on things so much so that sometimes I was rendered too mature and too outspoken – but not by all, because most of the leaders saw a light in me and knew that I was going to become something special. One of those leaders was Dwight Drummond, who is now the Dwight Drummond we know on CBC News, but I knew him as Dwight Drummond with the dimple in his nose, who I called ‘bum nose’! Yeah, kids can be so crazy sometimes. To me, the little dip in his nose looked like he had a booty on his face, but we laugh about it now because, after all, what does a 10-year-old know? Nothing! Anyway, I digress. I look at Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada from then until BGC Canada now and I’m so grateful to see how empowered the youth’s voices have become. I’m so grateful to see that their maturity and life experiences are being celebrated and awarded by BGC Canada with national initiatives like Youth of the Year, the Youth Leading Reconciliation program, and the National Youth Council (NYC) – and celebrated by our Prime Minister and by people like me, once a member, now an ambassador.

I want to celebrate BGC Canada for all that they’re doing, all that they’ve done and all that they’re about to do. I know that being part of BGC Canada played a great, important, valuable role in my life because I was able to be a kid; even though I had my moments of maturity, my frontal lobe and prefrontal cortex were still developing and so it was nice to go there and be accountable and to make sure my homework was done so I could get back to playing already! I was super young when I was a member and I’m so grateful that somebody saw a light in me and allowed it to shine.

BGC Canada, congratulations on all of your success! I celebrate everyone in leadership and I want to send a special shout out to Jared Morrow who has been amazing to get to know, work with, build with, dream with and someone who I have chosen, as a black woman, to call an ally.

Peace.

Opportunity changes everything

If this sentence doesn’t resonate with you, then maybe opportunity wasn’t something you had to think about. Or maybe you had to create your own opportunities — but doors were still open to you and so “changes everything” doesn’t hit the same.

When I first heard this, I liked it. It rang true because it moves from the usual debates about policing and gun control and other short-term solutions and looks to the long game: if we create opportunities, especially for young people, we change lives, we change communities, we change our
country.

For me, opportunity is when those who are invisible or excluded are given a chance to show their abilities to others who have the resources to take them to the next level. I often say give me the interview and I will get the job. I’m not looking for you to give me the job — I’m looking for a safe and brave space to present the greatness that I have manifested.

Playing organized basketball at the Boys and Girls Club was my opportunity. It kept me focused and off the streets. I always did well academically and clearly music was a given, but it was when I got deep into organized sports that I realized sport imitates society. If you can contribute to a team and you know that the success of that team is dependent on your commitment and focus, it will transfer into other areas of your life. I fundamentally believe that I’ve had success in the music business because I know how to play on a team.

I know people will read this and say I am an exception — but I shouldn’t be. For too many Canadians, opportunity is not available. How do you realize your potential when you can’t even find the doors in the first place, let alone open them?

We are lucky in Canada to have organizations out there doing what they can to level the playing field, like Boys & Girls Clubs. Across the country, they remove barriers and create opportunities for thousands and thousands of kids and teens. Most importantly, they help kids develop the talents and skills they need so that when a door opens, a young person can take advantage of that moment.

That’s why I’m happy to champion their new Systemic Opportunity campaign, which reinforces the role Boys & Girls Clubs play in building social safety nets for so many young Canadians.

The COVID-19 pandemic has widened the gap across Canada, especially for BIPOC communities. Over the summer, Black people and other people of colour made up 83 per cent of COVID cases in Toronto. StatsCan data shows that workers of colour are hit harder by job loss, Indigenous communities are experiencing worsening mental health, and newcomers are struggling with increased anxiety.

In general, racial inequities are on the rise. And research shows that children who face racism are more likely to be victims of poverty and abuse, have more interactions with child welfare and the justice system, and experience challenges at school.

The new Boys & Girls Clubs campaign contrasts these systemic issues with the systemic solutions that Clubs offer — equity, acceptance, support, opportunity. And these are not just words. This way of thinking structures all their programs and services, with one goal: provide young people with what they need to be their best selves.

I have seen this firsthand. I have witnessed how club staff and participants have formed unique connections that are tied to their humanity, not what could be happening outside the club’s door. I have spoken to club members and heard the excitement about their future, despite their current circumstances. It’s clear
they are supported and encouraged.

But Boys & Girls Clubs and other charitable organizations shouldn’t be doing this work alone. If opportunity is giving those who are invisible and excluded a chance to showcase their abilities, then it’s clear we need to create favourable conditions — and that means investing in young people and the communities where they live.

Many of us are born with what people call “raw talent.” And when I hear the word raw, I think of what is needed to shape that talent. It’s not just money. Youth need to know that they are being heard and respected and taken seriously enough to be invested in.

It’s a beautiful thing to receive a financial boost, but it’s even more important to see the proud and present heart behind the donation. That’s what will propel Black youth and others who need opportunity to truly soar into their purpose.

Opportunity changes everything.

Hello fam!

We are happy to announce that Jully has joined forces (once again!) with the incredible Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada for their Systemic Opportunity campaign!

We are sharing the press release with you below and will be sharing more details in the very near future. Stay tuned!

—–

Toronto, ON, October 21, 2020 – Today, Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada launched a new campaign that reinforces the important role Boys & Girls Clubs play in building social safety nets for so many young Canadians.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated and exposed serious systemic issues, from racism and other forms of discrimination to inequity and the far-reaching effects of poverty. Research shows that children who face racism are more likely to be victims of poverty and abuse, have more interactions with child welfare and the justice system, and experience challenges at school. Our new campaign juxtaposes these systemic issues with the systemic solutions that Boys & Girls Clubs across the country offer—equity, acceptance, support, opportunity.

“The core values of Boys & Girls Clubs—Belonging, Respect, Encouragement and Support, Working Together, Speaking Out—are built around inclusion and we are proud of the work we do,” says Owen Charters, President & CEO, Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada. “Our new Systemic Opportunity campaign encapsulates the driving force behind Boys and Girls Clubs with a simple statement: opportunity changes everything. Whether it’s homework help or a homeless shelter, a quick snack after school or the only meal of the day, a high five or a 1-to-1 mental health check-in, our Clubs offer everything a young person needs, including access to opportunities they might not find outside our walls—but could change their life.”

The campaign was developed in close collaboration with Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada’s strategic and creative agency ROUND, along with the creative team of Tim Das and Sean Davison, and ROUND’s production partners Makers, School Editing, and Grayson Music.

“Boys & Girls Clubs do so much and we needed more people to understand the significant difference they make in the lives of hundreds of thousands of kids across the country. There’s no denying the power of the word ‘Systemic’. But these days, systemic is always followed up by a negative word like ‘Racism’, ‘Poverty’ or ‘Inequity’. Systemic problems require systemic change. That’s how we landed on Systemic Opportunity. Because investing in kids and youth is how we can all work to fix many of the systemic issues in our society today,” said ROUND Founding Partner & Creative Director, Paul Riss.

The campaign is not just a clever play on words. For over a century, Boys and Girls Clubs have removed barriers and created opportunities for all young people, of all backgrounds. We see firsthand the effects of systemic problems—and we know that the solution is investing in young people, in communities, in platforms that give young people a voice. We know the solution is systemic.

We are also proud to welcome beloved Canadian icon Jully Black as spokesperson for our new campaign and strong supporter of Boys & Girls Clubs.

The Systemic campaign debuted today on Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada’s social media platforms (@BGCCAN and #OpportunityChangesEverything) and will extend to television and cinema over the next few weeks.

“At this time of year, the theatre, dance and opera sector would typically be celebrating the launch of the 2020-21 season. Instead the industry continues to feel the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While many parts of our economy cautiously begin to reopen, the performing arts remain largely dark – amongst the first to close and will be the last to re-open.

The impact to date in Toronto is 25,000 cancelled or postponed public performances; $500 million lost ticket sales; 20 million lost audience members.

To raise awareness of the effect of the pandemic on the theatre, dance and opera community in Toronto we are inviting you, our audiences to join artists in celebrating our vibrant cultural landscape.

JOIN the Campaign!

Share a vid or pic of your favourite Toronto Theatre Moment to social media, including the hashtag #iMissLiveTheatreTO “

Jully’s most incredible theatre moment is at the 6:44 mark!

We all must proceed with caution, but we must NOT allow FEAR to deplete our joy bank!

Sometimes you have to take a personal stand and declare to your inner negotiator that you are not afraid even when deep down inside you may have some old, fearful stories playing in your mind.

We know that thoughts become things; that what we believe 100% will *become*, so join me in unity today from where ever you are – turn that frown upside down, dance with abandon and make a joyful sound – declare “MI NO FRAID”!

If you need something to look forward to today, give this track a PRE-SAVE so it’s ready for you on Friday, March 27th!

Jully Black is back, starring as a 1960s domestic worker in the musical Caroline, or Change and releasing her first independent album (2020) in a decade. We talked to the singer about her rule for new projects, her side gig as an underwear model and why musicals are an Olympic sport.

Welcome back! And where have you been?

I’ve been through a lot in the past few years and my imagination went dark. I became a full-time caregiver to my mom, who died of cancer in 2017 at 81. When I turned 40, I realized my mom had lived twice my life- time, and I started to think about what I could do with my second lifetime. I want to make projects that align with my values.

Is that why you took the role in Caroline, or Change?

It’s a great part, but also the character really reminds me of my mom. Like Caroline, she was a domestic worker in Jamaica before she moved to Canada, where she raised her children on her own while building a career at General Motors. And Caroline takes pride in everything that she does. My mom was like that, too.

How does starring in a musical compare to being a Top 40 pop star?

Doing a musical is the Olympics for singers. I’m like Michael Jordan, LeBron, Serena Williams, Tiger Woods. There’s no going out late, and I’m really careful about my health and diet.

I just saw your image on the side of a bus. How long have you been moonlighting as an underwear model?

Ha! That’s a campaign for the underwear line Knix.

Have you seen your bus driving by?

Like the classic Sex and the City moment? Not yet! People keep telling me there is a giant version of the poster in [Toronto’s] Union Station—like I should go down and take a selfie in front of it. I don’t drink my own Kool-Aid that much.

When @musicalstageco asked me to BEcome Caroline a year ago I initially said “no” (in my mind) but “I’ll think about it” to them… I was terrified. What most don’t know is for my entire career I learned every thing musical by ear. I also had many years when my voice became unreliable due to stress, anxiety and poor habits. I even hemorrhaged in 2012 and could only speak for 15 minutes/hour for 5 months!!!

I’ve prayed for a career breakthrough and for a way to honour my Mother’s legacy and little did I know it would come as the biggest vocal and acting assignment of my life! Fast forward a year after training with @elaineoverholt @bigvoicestudios and I’m singing better than I ever have in my 42 years! I now understand that it’s the work , discipline, consistency, joy and patience that fuels the faith!

I dedicate this role to every woman who did domestic work to raise their families and put their dreams on hold!

Joe Szekeres, Chief Toronto Critic

I’ve ‘UNCOVERED’ a treasure gem of a terrific evening of riveting entertainment by the Musical Stage Company.

I just wished I had known sooner about the history of ‘Uncovered’. It’s played the past thirteen years as I would have made my way to Toronto far sooner to receive this early Christmas/holiday gift for myself. It’s only here for a short time and I hear tickets are going fast.

Do anything you can to see this production and, especially, to hear some of our superb Canadian vocalists offer a heartfelt tribute to the music of Stevie Wonder and Prince.

Three quarters concert and one quarter story telling, ‘Uncovered: Stevie Wonder & Prince’ follows a back story behind some of the iconic music of two of North America’s beloved artists. I learned from the programme that the text featured in the production has been curated from actual quotes spoken by Stevie Wonder & the late Prince.

Naturally, the big question – Who will play Stevie Wonder & Prince?

Sarah Afful and Chy Ryan Spain respectively play them with a natural, believable characterization and likability that I honestly felt the two were speaking to me directly throughout the evening. Ms. Afful wore the colourful clothing akin to Stevie Wonder’s fashion style during his many concerts. During Wonder’s songs, I looked at Ms. Afful who became Stevie Wonder to me. She slowly moved her head from side to side in the same manner. She adopted his same smile. Wonderful.

As the somewhat distant loner who introduced the world to androgyny (along with Boy George), Chy Ryan Spain captured a heartbreaking aloofness and poignant sadness as Prince that led me to understand further some of the background behind his songs. At the top of the show, Mr. Spain as Prince referred to the tremendous respect for Stevie Wonder. He said,

“If Michael Jackson is the king of pop, Stevie Wonder is the emperor.”

That same respect and admiration both Ms. Afful and Mr. Spain had for these two artists (and along for each other) was continuously evident to me throughout the show.

What was also the crème de la crème for me of the evening were the selection of singers who showcased their talent. And what a selection of names that I recognized – Thom Allison, Jully Black and Jackie Richardson. The other names to whom I was introduced this evening – Colin Asuncion, Aimee Bessada, Divine Brown, Lydia Persaud, Cary Shields, Michelle Bouey and Alan Hibbert – left me gobsmacked with their vocal renditions of several hits by Wonder and Prince.

Whenever I’m out to review, I always have my notebook in hand to write ideas down if a thought comes to me during the performance. I just decided to close the book, put the pen away and just sit and listen.

Was I disappointed? Absolutely not.

Under Reza Jacobs’ outstanding music direction, vocal arrangements and orchestrations, these ten artists gripped me with their powerhouse vocal work which soared high to its extreme heights on the stage of Koerner Hall at the Royal Conservatory of Music. The smile did not leave my face at all during the evening. I looked around and saw many audience members around me were the same.

Jackie Richardson’s solo renditions of ‘Purple Rain’ and ‘For Once in My Life’ blew the roof off Koerner Hall. ‘My Cherie Amour’ was beautifully sung by Jully Black as I was on every word she sang. Thom Allison’s ‘Knocks Me Off My Feet’ taught me so much about the responsibility artists have in selling a song and believing every word that is crooned.

Cary Shields’ ‘Raspberry Beret’ was deliciously and sweetly delivered. Aimee Bessada, Divine Brown and Lydia Persaud worked a poignant and soulful ‘When Doves Cry’ that brought a hushed silence for a few seconds after the song concluded before the much-deserved applause. Colin Asuncion’s ‘Superstition’ soulfully sang right to my very being that I just closed my eyes because I wanted to hear the words and listen attentively to the music.

An absolute joyful gift. Treat yourself and a guest. Another definite must see.

FINAL COMMENTS: ‘Uncovered: Stevie Wonder & Prince’ runs only to November 7 at Koerner Hall, Telus Centre for Performance and Learning at the Royal Conservatory of Music, 273 Bloor Street West, Toronto. It then transfers for two nights, November 8 and 9, to the George Weston Recital Hall at the Meridian Centre (formerly Toronto Centre for the Arts).

Now a hotly anticipated annual event in Toronto, The Musical Stage Company‘s
musical tribute sits squarely at the intersection of theatrical
production and concert, improving both. This year’s iteration, Uncovered: Stevie Wonder & Prince, celebrating the music of both artists, was an absolute delight.

In this show, actors play the artists being covered – this year Sarah
Afful as Stevie Wonder and Chy Ryan Spain as Prince. An amount of
selected narrative is applied to the mostly-musical experience,
stringing together direct quotes, that give a glimpse into the
experiences and feelings of each musician, though nothing like a history
or memoir. And in between and among, top-calibre musicians interpret
the hits of Stevie Wonder and Prince in idioms ranging from quite
faithful, to fairly inventive.

Uncovered
falls for me into the category of performance experiences that feel
enchanted. It’s a combination of risk – Music Director and arranger Reza
Jacobs takes liberties, they pay off but are risks nonetheless – and
seeing great talents pick up and make what they can of other great
talents. If you’ve seen Mark Rylance perform Shakespeare, you know just what I mean. I sat in the audience watching Jackie Richardson
perform For Once In My Life and I felt like a teenager confronted with a
wildly arousing scenario out of nowhere, sweaty and delighted and
overwhelmed.

A particular magic of these arrangements is the way they highlight a
facet of the song that isn’t necessarily otherwise foregrounded. Aimee
Bessada gave Part-Time Lover a seductiveness I’d never heard in it
before, and Thom Allison turned in a Manic Monday of hopeful, wistful
energy. If I had a complaint about the evening, it was Cary Shield,
whose acoustic renditions sometimes felt more like Jonathan Coulton-style
parody than interpretation. Jully Black was tremendous, with such a
richness of expression, and I enjoyed my first time hearing Lydia Persaud.

Between songs, the actors playing Wonder and Prince shaped
well-chosen vignettes, giving some insight into the character and
personality of each and rounding out the evening. Both Spain and Afful
found the delicate balance of invoking the characters they were playing,
without resorting to mimicry.

Uncovered
is a popular Toronto evening, and it’s easy to see why. The wattage of
talent, the inventive spirit of the performers and the tenderness Jacobs
brings to the musical arrangements as he takes the work of giants
in-hand are an unbeatable combination, and this year’s catalogues are
especially inspiring.

Theatre Critic

Wed., May 22, 2019

“Change come fast and change come slow, but change come.”

That line is sung by the Moon in Caroline, or Change and now Changeis coming back to Toronto courtesy of Musical Stage Company and Obsidian Theatre Company.

A local sold-out production of the musical by Tony Kushner (Angels in America) and Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home) won four Dora Awards in 2012.

Robert McQueen and Reza Jacobs will return as director and music director for this “reimagined and expanded staging” at the historic Winter Garden Theatre Jan. 31 to Feb. 16, 2020, the first production in the Musical Stage Company’s new annual residency. And there are two big names in the cast: award-winning soprano Measha Brueggergosman will play the Moon and Canadian R&B star Jully Black will make her musical theatre debut as the titular Caroline.

“It’s a manifestation, a dream come true,” said Black, a Juno Award-winning artist, activist and entrepreneur nicknamed “Canada’s Queen of R&B.”

She has appeared on the small screen in Trey Anthony’s Da Kink in My Hair as well as other dramatic TV roles, but her musical theatre debut is a long-awaited challenge for the 41-year-old — she had dreams of studying musical theatre as a teenager but was held back by her inability to sight-read sheet music.

After a successful recording career in Canada, her debut in “the Olympics for vocalists” is bringing new-found nerves as she prepares to shed the stage persona cultivated over the past 20 years.

“This is not Jully Black playing Caroline. This is Jullyann Inderia Gordon playing Caroline,” she says.

It’s also about the connection between her own family history, growing up in the Jane and Finch neighbourhood with Jamaican immigrant parents, and the story of Caroline, a Black maid working for a white Jewish family in 1960s Louisiana.

“I think of it as an homage to the women in my family who worked as domestics in Jamaica and, when they came to Canada, raised their kids off that career and who were afraid to think beyond their surroundings,” said Black.

“On the flip side, I realized my mom could have been a Caroline — she was the daughter of a Caroline — and chose to make her life different. Still, she earned $1.65 an hour and turned that into a life for five kids. I’m telling a bit of both sides of the story.”

Black first worked with Musical Stage Company and artistic director Mitchell Marcus last November for the company’s annual UnCoveredconcert, where Marcus developed an “enormous artistic crush.”

“She has a curiosity and a hunger to break outside of the box of what she’s known for in a way that I don’t encounter very often … This is an artist that is ready to take this on and wants to put in the work. She just naturally brings something to the table that goes exactly right for who Caroline is and what the experience of the audience is with the character,” Marcus said.

Musical Stage Company has grown significantly since its 2012 production of Caroline, or Change, when it was known as the Acting Up Stage Company. That production was its first partnership with Obsidian Theatre Company, its first sellout and brought its first Dora Award for Outstanding Musical Production.

“I think there was a bit of an arrival for us … And more broadly, I think we just stopped saying things like, ‘We can’t have that show in Canada,’ and trusted that the work is good enough, people are going to come.,” Marcus said. In the years since, development of new Canadian musical theatre has exploded and revealed new audiences for more intimate musical theatre experiences.

“There’s a real sophisticated theatregoer that’s been cultivated in our city. This piece, in particular, started to create a really monumental bridge proving theatre and musical theatre aren’t necessarily on two different ends of the spectrum, and there can be a common artistry and insight and audience for both,” he said.

Rounding out the cast of the upcoming revision are returning performers like Deborah Hay and Alana Hibbert, and actors new to the show, including Damien Atkins, Oliver Dennis, Linda Kash, Stewart Adam McKensey, Sam Rosenthal, Keisha T. Fraser, Samantha Walkes and Vanessa Sears.

Besides getting another chance to do justice to Caroline, or Change, Marcus said there’s an emotional motivation to staging this story again in 2020.

“This story is about change, about terrible, difficult, difficult change both politically and personally. But it bursts with this beating heart of hope,” he said.

“Even though these characters aren’t perfect and they can’t change the world, and some of them will go to their graves not making the change they’d wanted, they’d done something. To me, that is so moving in a world that right now feels impossible.”

Correction – May 22, 2019: This article was edited from a previous version that misstated Keisha T. Fraser’s surname.

Jully Blacktag:jullyblack.ca,2005:Post/70648892018-04-04T18:58:28-04:002022-09-20T21:22:33-04:00Jully’s Open Letter regarding Canada Reads 2018, supporting Indigenous rights, ‘The Marrow...
It all started as a friendly competition. “There’s only room for one JB,” I joked with Tom Power on Q, the radio show he hosts on CBC.

When he asked about my strategy to bring home the win for Cherie Dimaline’s The Marrow Thieves, I simply said, “I’m going to tell the truth because it takes no effort to remember it.” Little did I know my truth would share the stage while championing her work.

To be honest, being chosen as a panellist for Canada Reads (CBC’s highly acclaimed literary competition) brought up some serious insecurities that I’ve tucked away for most of my life. It’s amazing how much a Black child’s negative self-image, pressed into the psyche by labels and opinions of the people who were paid to educate us, can linger on long after our formal education is complete. My English teacher once told me it were up to him, he would fail me. He didn’t make good on his threat, but instead continually marked my assignments at 51% regardless of the effort I put in. A classmate of mine, a white girl who was consistently marked with high grades, once offered to swap papers with me. When the teacher returned our papers, there it was again, at the top of my essay, in black ink. 51%.

The opportunity to be a Canada Reads panellist was, in many ways, an opportunity to prove to myself that I am greater than my flawed self-image. So when I said yes, it was a “YES” to allowing myself a new voice; one that spans beyond music, and one to finally speak over those insecurities.

Canada Reads is a live television show that places five great Canadian Books in the hands of celebrity panellists, all of whom who must read each book and choose one to defend. By the second chapter of The Marrow Thieves, the title (Finding Direction) and the first sentence had me stop and reflect on my own life right away.

“Sometimes, French, you gotta trust that people are making decisions for the better of the community based on thing’s they know that you don’t.”

The Marrow Thieves is like a literary Trojan horse. At first glance, it could be mistaken simply for a young adult story set in a dystopian future. But this it dawned on me, once I began to understand, the characters, that The Marrow Thieves is an allegory for residential schools. It’s the story of quiet genocide that Indigenous peoples (and their supporters) often get criticized and harassed for talking about. It’s the story of community struggle, and also an incredible story about hope and love. It’s a reality of finding laughter, love, family, and adventure in the midst of pain and oppression.

I was in my own pain when I began to read The Marrow Thieves; when I first opened the book, it had only been 13 days since I buried my beloved mother.

I felt in my spirit that there was a purpose behind this book being assigned to me. This is why I not only wished to defend The Marrow Thieves for a competition, but truly believe this book should be incorporated into every high school English curriculum across the nation. I didn’t choose The Marrow Thieves; this book had chosen me. It might have been a work of fiction, but Cherie Dimaline had written into it a powerful reality.

After closing the book for the final time, I was blessed with the opportunity to meet and hang out with Cherie. Our souls instantly connected. The warm embrace and enthusiasm from Cherie, upon finding out I was chosen to defend her book, was an ointment for wounds I’d carried since childhood.

What’s amazing is that we didn’t speak much, if at all, about her book. We simply hung out and allowed our spirits to connect authentically. Long after you meet people, you may not always remember what they said or what they did, but you will always remember how they made you feel. Being around Cherie, with her skin tattooed like mine, and with her bold, gracious personality, I felt accepted. I felt smart! We swapped numbers and made a pact to keep in touch.

For me, defending this book was going to be more than just a debate. There was a greater purpose at stake than helping a talented author grace the bestseller lists. Cherie’s book had the potential to reshape Canada’s national narrative on reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. It was an urgent call to action. That’s why my confident, new-found voice told me Jully, prepare yourself.

While I was on tour, Cherie and I kept in touch. While preparing lines for my first starring role (in the gospel musical production Amazing Grace) we kept in touch. During the weekend of the Juno Awards (which concluded on the eve of Canada Reads), we kept in touch. Every day following the debates, I checked in with Cherie to ensure I was correctly representing her book, and her community.

Being Black in front of a live national audience meant I had to be ten times more informed, and had zero room for error. My personal goal was to make sure I could be an ally for Indigenous communities, and also make sure not to take up undue space. I wanted to champion this book as a means to open Canada’s eyes, and to provoke the audience into making change for all of us.

Throughout my career, I’ve become accustomed to being the only Black person the room, so I was in comfortable territory as a panellist on Canada Reads. But the reality is, I am still a Black woman. The same demeanour that earns my white peers superlatives like “confident,” and “assertive” has earned me labels like “loud,” “angry,” “aggressive,” and “obnoxious.” In my exchange with Jeanne Beker, I earned another label for stating a factual point: attacker. I have never been accused of attacking another person while having a conversation; to be accused of that on live national television was, at the very least, antagonistic. Given our purpose for being on the show (to passionately defend books that we believe to be Canada’s strongest literary work) it was completely inappropriate.

To give you some perspective, when the cameras were off, Jeanne and I got along fine. But the on-camera tension began a day or so prior when she stated that The Marrow Thieves was too dark. She may not have realized it, but that description, coming out of her mouth, was the first hint of colonial privilege that I later brought up in our exchange. Indigenous peoples do not have the luxury of the light-heartedness that Beker seemed to be advocating for, because “too dark” is their history and their present day reality. That was the point of the book: for Canada to see life through their eyes. And that was the point that Ali Hassan excused the audience from internalizing, when he made an exception to colonial privilege for the people in the audience.

I often pray to God that He stand in my body, think through my mind, and speak through my lips. The old Jully – the bitter Jully – would have reacted to being mischaracterized as “attacking” Jeanne by giving her the business right away. The better Jully, on the other hand, gives my mind over to God and lets His grace work through me. Jeanne cut me off once while speaking.

“But Jully what about what’s happening with ourselves, yeah we gotta change the world but there are a lot of screwed up people in the world…”

I let it slide. Then she cut me off again.

“There’s [sic] a lot of people who have to work on themselves. When we see people wreaking havoc…”

When I attempted to finish my thought, which she seemed to be listening to, things took an unexpected turn. Jeanne blurted out “Why are you attacking me?”

My prayer came through in full effect, and that’s when the words naturally came forth: “Whatever you’re feeling take it to the altar because I am not the one that’s responsible for your feelings.”

For every accomplishment I’ve made in my life, my mom always told me “Well done.” Whether it was winning awards, or being chosen to sing for the Queen of England, my mom always carried those two words for me. Well done. My mom, who lived a beautiful 81 years, always provided a voice of wisdom when my insecurities had me trying to ease God out of my soul. The night that I defended The Marrow Thieves was, to the day, four months since my Mother took her last breath. And on that date, possibly for the first time on Canadian national television, the daily lived reality of Black women was brought into instant focus. I know that, in heaven, mom was looking down and telling me, once more, “well done.” That was good enough.
But the thunderous applause from Black women around the globe, who related to that moment of personal truth, has been overwhelming. It became even more clear to me that so many of us have been silenced by fear of losing our jobs, relationships, access to career enhancing opportunities, or even social and economic status. We are silenced, while forced to carry the emotional burdens of white fragility and white privilege; and forced to silence ourselves before white women, who weaponize their fragility by defaulting to victim mode when faced with a black woman carrying knowledge and understanding.
Black women don’t have the option to be fragile. Ever.
I’d like to highlight a few things that may not be quite so apparent to many white Canadians. We, Black women, are capable of formulating and delivering intelligent thought. We do not need your applause for being “articulate.” We are capable of expressing ourselves with passion, boldness, and respect. We do not need your fragility. We are capable of freely having a difference of opinion. We do not need your labels of “difficult,” “combative,” and “aggressive.” You can take the “angry black woman” label and leave that at the altar too.
And we have as broad a range of emotion as you are capable of feeling. A society that affixes the label “strong” to Black women, and Black men, is a society that would rather we suppress our feelings and cope with the institutional harm that your people have inflicted upon us, and still continue to inflict upon us.
The theme for the 2018 season of Canada Reads was “One book to open Canada’s eyes.” Through fiction and futurism, I contend The Marrow Thieves was exactly that. Dimaline’s writing piqued my curiosity, and prompted me to step out of my own relatively privileged sphere to learn so much more.
What really happened in residential schools? What is still happening now, through the Children’s Aid system? It’s sad to say that what I learned through Cherie’s mentorship (and, of course, Google), is far more than I learned in a school system that was content with my invisibility.
The morning of the Canada Reads finale was the day the news broke that Pope Francis stated he would not issue an apology for the Catholic church’s role in the abuses committed in residential schools. That apology, which would mean so much to Indigenous peoples, also happened to be one of the 94 calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. It was a clear slap in the face, and made me understand how easily their concerns are dismissed.
As a Black woman, I cannot accept injustice against my Indigenous brothers and sisters. And to speak from the skin I am in, I will use my platform as a bridge, to amplify Indigenous voices and affirm the truth that racism and discrimination is alive and well in Canada. But we are living in a time where we can easily come together to change that.
I would also like to mention that, after saying what I said to Jeanne Beker, not only did people from Black and Indigenous communities congratulate me, I also received a degree of love and accountability from white people. And there’s a lesson in those messages that was best said in a tweet I received from Twitter user @openmindsMH: “Fellow white folks, this is essential viewing. We need to hear POC’s truths without feeling personally attacked by their pain, anger, outrage, even simple fact-stating. It’s hard, but we are better for it. I applaud @jullyblack for this.”
Being able to listen to our truths is a good place to start. But action is the vital component that’s been missing from the process. One of Cherie Dimaline’s quotes, over the last few days, has been resonating with me: “We cannot continue to congratulate ourselves on reconciliation when there has been so little action.”
A ninety second video clip, at the end of the day, is a place to begin the conversation.
